Sean “Saint Velvet” Marion started his musical journey in 2016. He was gifted with a guitar during his time as an infantry Marine by the Wounded Warrior Project. Subsequently, this provided him with the perfect opportunity to start learning to play guitar and cope with his struggles of PTSD with the help of music.

Harnessing the power of molding the rhythm and vocals according to your preferences and styles, this cruise of Sean’s aim to cope with PTSD became a life-changing decision. Now his guitar is more than just an instrument; it’s a bond that keeps the artist focused and grounded through his life.

Since then, Sean Saint Velvet was wholeheartedly intrigued by music that sparked his dive into exploring and broadening his horizons of jamming and producing his original tracks of striking singles.

As a multi-talented artist, his catalog of brilliant flair does not end his curiosity at this point. Sean’s quality feature embarks his ability to change his style according to his evocative feelings. As a soloist, he is the only leader of his thrilling expedition.

A conversation with Sean Saint Velvet

I had the opportunity to chop it up with Sean Saint Velvet. He is a graduate of Northern Arizona University with a bachelor’s in political science and psychology. Also, a Veteran, who served two tours into Helmand province Afghanistan. Now a father to two children, and an avid musician who translates emotions into poetic songs. A modern-day warrior, father, and bard. As an independent artist from Flagstaff Arizona, he is trying to play as many gigs as he can! Let’s dive into the conversation.

Previous to receiving a guitar from the wounded warrior project, were you already a musician, or was this your first instrument?

It was my first guitar. It was a green Washburn that I jammed on. I didn’t understand finger placements or chord progressions, but I started practicing. I took lessons, but I mainly played and learned by myself. It took years to get to the point where I was comfortable crafting my own melodies.

Are your musical preferences for listening different from the music you prefer to play?

Yes, I do not listen to the type of music I play. I enjoy listening to Tupac, Gunna, and various other rap artists. I channel the music into my own. This is very ironic to me, but I’m inspired by deep lyrics and perspectives from the soul.

Do you, or have you, performed live?

I have two live shows in March. I’m looking forward to my first show. In 2022 and beyond, I want to play as many live gigs as I can. I don’t care if I’m jamming at a coffee shop, bar, or anywhere, I’m willing to play.

Do you prefer working alone or with other artists?

I prefer working by myself. I’ve never worked with other artists, but in the future, I would be open to it. Possibly a female artist that could sing a chorus. Maybe even work with an electric guitarist. One day this will happen, we will see where the music takes me.

What are the hardest obstacles in your life you’ve overcome?

I believe the hardest thing I overcame was transitioning out of the military. The guitar really helped me with the process. I suffered from PTSD. Through playing music, I was able to overcome my struggles.

Do you find it important to reflect this in your lyrics?

I do find it very beneficial to express my pain and tribulation through my lyrics. When I picked up the guitar, my goal was to play Nutshell by Alice In Chains. It took me a while to pick up the chords. That song influenced me to start playing and singing heartfelt music from my soul. That’s exactly what I do now.

Musically, who is your biggest inspiration and how do they inspire you?

I believe my biggest inspiration is Tupac. Throughout my life, I have been inspired by this rap artist. My favorite song of his is Staring Through my Rearview. I know I’m not a rapper, but I believe any musically inclined artist, from any genre, can influence anyone.

What future projects are you currently working on?

I’m currently working on a single named Purpose. This song is going to be about why we are here. “We come from the stars, our souls live forever.” “A life of scars, pain, and pleasure.” I’m really excited to record this single soon.

When you are not focused on music, what do you do that inspires your artistic endeavors?

I try to have meaningful conversations with the people that I consider friends and family. I also enjoy writing and expressing myself on social media and other social platforms.

What strengths do you have that you believe make you a great musician?

I believe my strength is resilience. It took years to be able to play the guitar at a level where I thought it sounded good. It took even longer to craft my voice and I’m still working through my struggles. I heard a lot of criticism, but I stick through it and kept playing. Even when I listen to my earlier music, I sometimes want to record the song again because I know I would make it better than before.

Do you have any weaknesses that you’re actively working to improve on?

When it comes to my music, I want to become more crisp with my finger placement on the chords. I also want to continue singing as well because I can improve. It may take years, but with hard work, I will be at a spot musically.

Is there anything else you wish to add?
